Advantage of twin cylinder cng cars 2023

Twin cylinder cng revolution by Tata

Tata Motors launched the Altroz iCNG in April 2023 with twin cylinder cng technology which proved to be a game changer in cng car segment. It was launched at an initial price of ₹7.55 lakhs, while its top model is priced at ₹10.55 lakhs. The car is available in multiple trims, and the top-spec model includes a sunroof feature. Due to its twin cylinder CNG  setup, the Altroz has gained popularity.

Now Tata Tiago and Tigor also in twin cylinder cng

Tata has updated two more cars with twin cylinder cng setup in August Tata Tiago and Tata Tigor. Now Tata Motors have a significant advantage in cng car segment, as other companies haven’t focused much on this direction yet.The starting prices for the hatchback Tiago is ₹6.55lakhs (ex-showroom price) and sedan Tigor is ₹7.8 lakhs (ex-showroom price) respectively. Before this, the Tiago and Tigor had single-cylinder CNG options, which limited the space for luggage in the boot. It’s worth mentioning that the Tigor CNG now comes with a tank capacity of 70 liters, the highest so far. Both these Tata models are equipped with a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox. In CNG mode, the engine produces 72bhp of power and 95Nm of torque.

How Tata motors changed the game

The demand for CNG cars in India is increasing every year because they are considerably more economical than petrol and diesel cars, thanks to the affordability of CNG fuel and higher mileage. While some customers were hesitant due to limited boot space in CNG cars, Tata Motors addressed this issue by introducing twin cylinder cng technology, leading to a significant increase in CNG car purchases and reinforcing Tata Motors’ strong position in the CNG segment.Currently, the local market sees monthly sales of approximately 34,000-35,000 CNG vehicles. The robust value proposition of CNG cars persists. As the CNG dispensing network expands, consumers will gain increased confidence in owning cng vehicles, leading to a further rise in the market share of CNG vehicles in the industry. In the initial two months of the year, CNG constituted 13% of total passenger vehicle sales in the country, marking a significant increase from 3.5% in 2019. Maruti Suzuki, a market leader providing CNG choices in 19 models, reported a surge in demand for vehicles powered by this fuel.

Drawbacks of CNG cars

When we talk of CNG cars, boot space is not the only drawback but there are few more to be considered before opting for one.

l. Lack of power

While driving CNG cars, you won’t experience the same pickup and top speed as you would with petrol because the engine’s primery fuel is not cng.

2. Lack of CNG availability

As you travel out of Delhi NCR and the neighbouring states you won’t find cng filling station easily.

3. Refilling required in less distance

CNG is cheap and gives better mileage but the distance covered in one cylinder is very less comparing to petrol. Therefore refilling in quick succession is required.

4. Fire hazards

There is always a chance of leakage if timely servicing is not done especially in non company fitted cng kits. And explosion of CNG cylinders due to high pressure which are not tested on regular basis.

Should we buy CNG cars or not?

This decision entirely depends on the consumer because, upon closer inspection, every car has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. In terms of security, issues related to safety with factory-fitted CNG are nearly equivalent to those of petrol cars, and the problem of boot space has been resolved with the advent of twin cylinder cng . This means that, in comparing petrol and CNG cars, only aspects like performance and power remain. From an economic perspective, CNG cars are still a better option compared to petrol or diesel cars, provided that there is good availability of CNG at the location you are coming from.
